Older forensic mental healthcare patients in England: demographics, physical health, mental wellbeing, cognitive ability and quality of life

Background: Older individuals (e.g., 55 years and over) constitute a growing proportion of the forensic mental health patient population. As group, they are vulnerable to outcomes similar other with serious disorders same age; however, these concerns can be compounded by complex forensic-related care backgrounds clinical presentations, lengthy periods time spent in prison or psychiatric hospitals, substance use histories, crime perpetration victimisation. The healthcare needs strengths this group not well understood. aim study was identify describe demographic, physical health, wellbeing, cognitive ability, quality life profiles older patients community, low, medium, high security settings England. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods design used. N=37 aged over were interviewed completed questionnaires. Data also collected from records. Results: Most male diagnosed psychosis. most frequently committed index offence types violent offences. Patients prescribed 7.6 medications on average had anticholinergic effect cognition scores 2.4. Nearly half sample diabetes, an BMI score 31.7 (indicating obesity). Possible impairment identified 65% sample. Patients’ assessments their recovery-related wellbeing did differ published UK general population values. Assessments positively correlated ability undertake everyday activities performance. Conclusions: We suggest that services well-placed provide holistic but should co-develop greater range age-appropriate meaningful mindful mobility issues consider implementing more cognition-based interventions.
